Happy Mozart’s birthday! I guess you could say I celebrated with Broken Social Scene. If you’ve a ticket for tonight or tomorrow, congratulate yourself because you’re in for a treat. We got 2+ hours of what seemed like 20 fulltime + adjunct band members, a mishmash of musicians entering and exiting the space, including Metric’s Emily Haines (who looked like Timmy Lupus’ twin but with, presumably, a much prettier voice) as well as the girl with the curiously wide hair. I’m sure Brooklyn Vegan will be all over this. I gotta go to bed.

I’ve been addicted to Apartment Therapy lately; while at my local hardware store to buy hardware to hang a floating shelf (more on that in a minute) and partly inspired by this, I happily happened upon a chalkboard! So I bought it. I have a bare wall in my kitchen (it’s more like a kitchenette) that needed something where a 2005 calendar once was hung. You might see where this is going…what to put on the chalkboard (besides recipes and grocery lists…you know, for all that cooking that I do). A calendar, of course.

Now for the stupid floating shelf. It’s lightweight; I bought sturdy hardware. But it tips forward and, even though it has a lip, I’m afraid to put the plates on it that I want to display. What to do? Has anyone ever had any luck? The attachment to the wall seems pretty sturdy, but the shelf won’t sit flush with the wall. Am I stuck with mounting underside brackets?

UPDATE: Unrelated, but I was just over at Flickr…I didn’t take class on Sunday (because I was kind of sore from Saturday’s class and had some work to do besides) and as a result I missed this precious little sprite.

I got tired of looking at myself at the top of the page so I thought I would post.

Remember when Gillian Anderson shed Dana Scully and revealed to us her Lily Bart, and it was wonderful? I’ll be watching Masterpiece Theatre for the next several Sundays to make sure her magic wasn’t a fluke.

Mike D’Angelo and Bilge Ebiri (note that the latter is through Nerve, in case you’re clicking from work and you or they care; also, the archive links are on the right and he’s got photos!) are blogging from Sundance.

You’re probably all wondering what my take on the Michelle Kwan/Olympics situation is, right? Well, I’ll tell you. I think she should go. Mind you, I say this with no knowledge of exactly how healthy she is. But, I do believe that this or any country sends its athletes to the Olympics because they are the country’s best and, particularly with the United States, because they present the best chance of earning a medal. Of the current crop of U.S. female skaters, only Sasha Cohen is a medal-contender, with the next best bet being Kwan. Kwan won’t perform well under the new scoring, I’m certain, but if she’s ready she’ll do okay.

UPDATE: Looks like she’s going. Incidentally, “Prelude in C# Minor” is one of my all-time favorite pieces of music.

Self Portrait

Self portrait, with a sliver of my new, brightly-colored wall in view.

UPDATE: The following exchange took place while my eyeballs were being checked out.

Optometrist: Do you work out?
Me: Yeah. I mean, I dance and I walk everywhere.
Optometrist: Because you have the blood vessels of a teenager!

Ladies and gentlemen, the most unusual compliment I’ve ever received.

UPDATE #2: Math will rock your world.

“Look at Chris’ results to see how clumpy” reads the post-it note I wrote to myself on my way out of work last night. To explain the meaning behind it wouldn’t take much effort but it would kill the humor.

The Intel Science Talent Search semi-finalists have been announced. I don’t know why, but I look forward to this every year. In March, DC residents and visitors can actually view the projects of the smartypants finalists at the National Academy of Sciences. (Please, go and pester them with questions, toughen them up a little.) Unsurprisingly, Montgomery Blair High School has muscled its way onto the list yet again with 14 semifinalists. Tragically, my high school is not represented. Oh wait, I mistook “science” as “football”.

Finally, welcome Brownstoner readers, a day late. To everybody: if things look a little funny around here over the next week or so, it’s because I’ll be playing around with the layout. Alternatively, I may scrap that idea and see a 7.5 hour Bela Tarr film instead. Riiiggghhht. UPDATE: Individual entry archives should be working again. For a few days, they weren’t (in some browsers). Oops.

UPDATE: I’m loving art month over at Apartment Therapy.
And, the return of Lost means the return of DCeiver’s hilarious recaps.

One of my pseudo New Years resolutions (’pseudo resolutions’ because I only half-heartedly make them and I usually break/forget about them) is to finally get around to finishing my apartment to my aesthetic likings. I still have framed posters leaning against instead of hanging on walls. They’ll probably never get hung. But I do need to find some more stuff to hang on one long wall around the lone Le Mepris/Brigitte Bardot poster. She’s pretty, though, and kind of deserves her own wall. Still, there’s something missing; I’ll figure it out. In the meantime, I’m going to paint! I chose a sunny golden color. If it’s too bright (though it’ll be on a wall without direct sun rays), I’ll redo it, but for now I am excited to start the project.

In other new year updates, I was about back to my normal, pre-holiday-gorging weight. And then today I went on a business lunch to Spice Market (I recommend the chef’s tasting menu) and gorged myself some more. I can’t say no to desserts. Even ones made with Ovaltine (no joke).

On top of delicious food this week, my first back to work in what seemed like forever, I saw the New York City Ballet in the early part of their winter rep season last night. Wendy Whelan was perfection in Christopher Wheeldon’s Liturgy with partner Albert Evans. She is as light as a feather and excitingly precise, with an unusual body built for efficiency but with arms like satin ribbons that stretch for miles. I remember back during the New York Film Festival when we were in the early midst of the days and days of pouring rain, depressing as hell, and when I was waiting under my umbrella to cross the street to Lincoln Center out of the subway, I looked next to me and there she was, all buck minus change (if not more) of her in tiny street clothes with her long hair hanging down her back, smiling. I couldn’t help but smile back.

I am often reminded that this is kind of a small town. Yesterday I went to one of Alex Beller’s master classes and in the class was my yoga teacher from my studio in Boerum Hill. Turns out she’s one of Alex’s dancers.

The unfortunate part of my story is this: I had to attempt a conversation and I had an unavoidable need to drink from my water bottle. You see, I went to my dentist in the morning for some fillings and thanks to repeated novocaine injections that took 4 hours to wear off, I kept drooling all over myself and talking through a lopsided mouth. Funny? Seriously, I accidentally spit all over my dentist’s chair & floor. We had a good laugh, but that was before I had to take the show out on the town.

Meanwhile–and I’m probably saying too much too soon as it is–The New World has bumped Brokeback Mountain out of the top spot on my 2005 movie list. That’s right.

My mom has been in town (not staying with me, however) and, after ushering her and her friend and friend’s family around Manhattan here and there, it occurred to me that the reason my legs are kind of hurting is not because of the walking, per se, but because of the pace. Now, I’m no Carl Lewis, but I do buzz like a little bee through the streets and so having to deliberately slow my pace to that of professional non-walkers has been a surprising workout.

But, aside from my meager attempts to entertain (tourists really do prefer to be around other tourists rather than in more interesting and/or out-of-the-way places, I’ve found), my time off of work has been terrific, confirmed by my happy birthday and happy new years. I have not successfully caught up on movie-watching, though. This whole end-of-year list thing is dying a slow death. UPDATE: Nope, it’s coming together.

Speaking of lists, here’s a staggering collection of links to the year’s notable music videos. (Link via S/FJ.) I’ve been rocking The National.
