Of the two bands I saw last night–Clearlake and The Decemberists–one would never guess that it is the former which is from England. I mean, The Decemberists are all about seas and castles and accordians and singing with weird accents. Pockets of lives and things from faraway lands or maybe just from a time long ago. In any case, many thanks to my occasional co-blogger Lane for reminding me of the show; had I missed The Decemberists a second time, I would have been sad. Or violently angry.

Got a ticket for the legendary Merce Cunningham’s modern dance company on Friday. Unfortunately, they are not performing Split Sides, which features music from Sigur Ros and Radiohead.

Tonight: Slicin’ up eyeballs, ah ha ha ha! Seriously. The AFI has been showing the Bu

I went to Utah last week. Not to ski, as most people have asked, but to hike around in the SW corner, in the desert. I flew into Las Vegas and drove there (90+ miles per hour–Yay!–and got a little claustrophobic while going through the Virgin River gorge), and I didn’t even stop in Las Vegas (save for a quick drive down the Strip at 10 in the morning when I drove back–yawn–and also to pig out at the In ‘N Out Burger before my lengthy flight which I feared would have not enough food for its passengers, as was the case when I flew out, on a flight that I wasn’t supposed to be on because my earlier flight got cancelled (thanks for calling at 5 a.m. to tell me, America West) thereby causing me to miss out on my planned afternoon at Zion. Not that I was desperate to eat airplane food or anything, but when you’re running, running, running to catch planes, you starve easily and will take what you can get). Anyway. The trip was pretty great. I love hiking. And this was some pretty good hiking; not walking-along-a-well-travelled-path hiking, but climbing-and-getting-winded-&-exhausted-fast hiking. And then you’ve got the scenery, such as this when I woke up in the wee hours of the morn and popped outside my door. Or the first hike, when the rock changed from red to black to white (the last pic is from when we were almost at the top). More interesting colors. I realize looking at these pictures that it’s impossible to get a feeling for the enormousness of scale (though it helps when actual people are accidentally captured in the photos). Oh well. And another hike up a wash which was much tougher than I expected. When I noted to my guide, Bob, that some of the massive boulders clinging precariously to the edges above us looked like they would fall at any second, he said, “We’d better hurry then.” And hurry & scurry we did. Here I am at the top of a rock looking happy, if sweaty and tired. A view from on high. We even saw the elusive gila monster, which has the best name for itself, like, ever and which I very nearly stepped on. Stay back, that Monster G is poisonous, although we crowded around to take his picture. No rattlesnakes, thankfully; too early in the year for that. Let’s see, I also sunned and stargazed from a hammock. I got an awesome massage and pedicure (which, after one dance class, I have managed to not yet ruin). I read (Running With Scissors and two issues of the Economist) like it was my job. I thought of the movie Gerry more often than I probably should have. I privately made fun of people who were exceptionally annoying, considering they were on vacation. (To wit: a woman bitched about a post-hike gentle yoga class. We were all pretty grateful for post-hike stretch and yoga classes, but this woman kept saying, “This is not yoga. I do ashtanga, and this is not yoga.” I was about to jump-back-chaturanga her ass.) In the end, I didn’t get enough time there, and I’m ready to go back. Did I mention it was unseasonably in the 80’s and that I missed bad rains by a couple of weeks? I suppose I am a lucky girl after all.

I haven’t felt like updating, so I shan’t apologize for my disappearance. Plus it’s my week off. I’m off to Utah tomorrow, and I expect to return to lots of comments spam. Have a great week!

The secret is out: the real reason why yoga has become so popular. (Link via Gawker.)

Mihow & I blogged (so to speak) the Oscars, since she saved our nearly four-hour IM session from last night and posted it to share with the world. Please excuse my terrible typing skills.
