Tonight after dance class, some of us were loitering out in the hall. One woman whom I’ll call ‘Meg’, who was recently proposed to, took advantage of the annual Filene’s Basement wedding dress extravanganza, whereupon brides-to-be in the metro DC area congregate to duke it out for ridiculously low-priced designer gowns. Think that episode of Friends when Monica recruits Rachel & Phoebe to get her dress, and Rachel ends up under a rack of dresses blowing her whistle in helplessness. Anyway, Meg took part AND found her dress. Apparently, she was even on the local news, and our teacher, whom I’ll call ‘H.’ caught it, and he re-enacted the moment, exaggerating tenfold Meg’s already animated animations. She was caught on television with her dress half on over her leotard-type outfit with a microphone shoved in her face, talking a thousand hyperactive words per second. Bless her heart. H. said one woman even got her dress for $5. How is that possible? It must’ve been a size minus-0 or size 124, or it was some c. 1982 frilly disaster. Anyway, this prompted a dialogue started by another dancer/teacher, whom I’ll call ‘G.’ about how it would be fun to do next year, even if one wasn’t getting married (I believe G. is already married). Then I was thinking about how the only way to one-up some of the princesses that are out for blood would be to bring a gaggle of gay male friends–a faggle, if you will. Can you imagine? Then again (and not envisioning myself as the wedding-type notwithstanding), I’m more of a lover than a fighter, so this is probably not my scene. (But if pressed, I’m fairly certain I could clean someone’s clock. I’m strong, yo.)
And speaking of these dancers, there’s a free show at the Carter Barron Amphitheatre Saturday the 9th, featuring past winners of the Metro DC Dance awards; I can personally vouch that the featured dancers/companies are the best DC has to offer. Now if I can only figure out how to get there. For some reason I don’t believe in owning a car, and those who know me know I have a complex about the bus. It’s not an elitist thing. I don’t understand the bus schedules and am afraid of getting on the wrong bus & getting lost, or just not knowing where to get off the bus. And what if I don’t have the correct exact fare? These things can keep a girl up at night.

Sex and the City:
I think this is a fitting rendering of what happened in this episode: Someone got to my page in the wee hours of the night by searching for “jack+berger+sucks”. Yes, yes he does. More like, he’s a chowderheaded asswad.
At the time, I was full of venom regarding otherwise great people who close themselves off and yet are old enough to know better. Now I’m simply reduced to name-calling towards fictional characters.
Girls, didn’t your hearts just go all a flutter when Harry proposed?
I wonder what Gene’s take on this episode was. He can’t make himself stop watching, see, even though he can’t stand the show.

Believe it or not, the Mandy Moore flick is not entirely unpleasant. Granted, a lot, a lot of stuff (I’ve read two novels worth) is packed into the movie, and as such, it feels a little herky jerky at times, but it seems to get at the reality of teenage life without belittling it. The film is dominated with broad emotion & some caricaturization, with heavy injections of (not alltogether unappealing) music. Moore has still has a way to go to develop her acting chops, but she has a refreshing & endearing quality to her.
Tangent: I should not be allowed in Neiman Marcus. Also, I fear a developing addiction to eBay. That is all.

I went to the doctor the other day, and I am totally healthy–no strep resurgence, and we ended up doing an impromptu check-up, including blood-work. A word of advice: there’s a reason why one needs to fast before such a test. In other words, do not eat Krispy Kremes and hard-boiled eggs 4 hours before your blood is taken, because it will skew your cholesterol readings.
Listening (because I’m too lazy to update my sidebar): Pernice Brothers (thank you Scott T.) and Earlimart.
Reading: Asymmetrical Information.
UPDATE: Jim Henley blogs about fitness in more practical terms than myself. (Note to Jim: I’m one of your readers who likes your fitness posts!) I, on the other hand, can only seem to bitch about the fact that, right now, the muscles in my forearms ache (I don’t think I’ve experienced that since my high school tennis days, if even then) and I’ve got this weird muscle twitch in my butt. Left side, to be precise. Oy vey. On the upside, I was doing forearm stands and handstands in yoga class the other night. On the downside, the floor successfully removed the skin from my knee in dance class and there’s more where that came from tomorrow night. Hello, liquid skin? (On a side note, this is why I allow myself the yummy (oh so yummy) indulgence in Krispy Kreme and other delightful treats.)

G.J. was simply outstanding in JC Superstar. He has a voice that melts my cold, cold heart. This production was modernized, very “street”, as the kids would say. A few seconds on stage and his girls were in full view. And let’s just say that Judas’ betrayal kiss went on a liiiittle too long for the comfort level of the suburbanite audience. Heehee. It’s a very strong production, very well-cast, and I’m proud of G.J.
Afterwards he & I went out with the cast for a bit to a Chinese restaurant that I kept calling I Ching because I couldn’t remember the name (and still don’t), and then he & I went to one of the local neighborhood’s boutique hotel bars, Helix. It’s very white (in terms of decor, that is) and slightly Euro-trashy. And everyone was skinny. I did feel suitably dressed.
I saw that swashbuckling fun-o-rama that is Pirates of the Caribbean yesterday afternoon. Johnny Depp: slightly drunk, slightly gay, who knows? I got a strong Gary Oldman vibe, too. Seriously, though, for someone who is so reserved in person (per what I’ve seen on Inside the Actor’s Studio), he’s got a wealth of creative impulse and energy and he always hits the right notes in all his roles. Orlando Bloom: hubba hubba, natch. Good times, even though it runs two hours and twenty minutes.
Before it I saw the trailer for Freaky Friday. For some reason I recall being a little appalled when I heard it was being remade, but I’m not sure why, since it was a fun little film that I liked when I was a kid, but save for immortalizing on film Jodie Foster’s ugly awkward years, it’s not too memorable. It’s not like they were remaking The Bad News Bears or something blasphemous like that. But this one: I was surprised to find myself laughing out loud, which means I’ll probably go see it. It stars Jamie Lee Curtis, who may or may not be returning to Fish Called Wanda-levels of comedy, and the grown-up Lindsay Lohen, formerly that impish girl from another Disney remake, The Parent Trap, a film I’ve seen more times than I care to admit (for awhile there it seemed to always be on tv!)

I know this is getting linked all over the place, but still I laughed (if by ‘laughed’ you mean ’sort of cringed in recognition’) and wanted to share.
UPDATE: The Modern Age takes her hipster bingo very seriously.

My strep may have made a reappearance, but I’m ignoring that possibility for the time being.
Built to Spill is going on tour soon! (Thank you slatch.com.)
I’m hoping to catch Gay Jeff this weekend as Judas in a local production of Jesus Christ Superstar. I passed on auditioning/dance captaining, and I think that was the right decision for me, but I’m excited to see it. In the meantime, my knees are bloody from dance class. Yes! I wonder, per my abundance of skirt-wearing, if people from work think that I trip & fall a lot.
Does admitting that I kind of want to see the new Mandy Moore flick mean I’m lame? I also still need to catch Pirates of the Caribbean.

Real quick, before I’m off to the Cat….
Sex and the City: I’ve actually been digging most of Carrie’s outfits lately, but I’m pretty sure I heard all of America groaning when she was wearing the shorts with beige tights with those purple kneepad-looking things on them. Um, what? That aside, she & Berger are impossibly cute. Miranda has been looking very pretty this season; she’s had some bad haircuts in the past. Poor Charlotte; I like Harry!
Okay, I’m out.
UPDATE: New P’s sounded great, even by Black Cat standards. The vocal harmonies were just fabulous. Also, hotstuff Neko Case was sporting a very un-centerfold-like Penn State Nittany Lions t-shirt (which, for those just joining in, is my grad school alma mater).
UPDATE TO MY UPDATE: A mild hangover and several hours shy of a full night’s sleep later, I’m wondering just how long this Monday is going to be. I suspect I will fall over in yoga class. I wonder how Marie is faring. And then there’s that “I work from home now so I can wake up at 4 pm” scalawag, Julian. The three of us nearly closed the Red Room.

I’ve been in a bit of a jolly, light-hearted mood, which is funny considering that work hasn’t let up. My weekends are as low-key as they come, except for the lowest of low zombie-esque television-watching, which I compel myself not to do.
However, sometimes one can be productive without hardly moving. I may finish a second book in a week (a truly big thing, given how slowly I read, that in itself being a big deal, since I used to read compusively as a youngster). I think I actually have a bit of a tan–or more freckles, at least–since I’ve been spending time lounging (and reading!) up on my roof. I’ve made significant dents in the Saturday & Sunday crosswords already. I watched a previously unseen Godard film (that would be Alphaville, which–if you’ll excuse my third-grade moment–amused me in part by the Alpha 60 voice that struck me as someone attempting to speak through their belches. You know what I’m talking about? Think back. Sometimes I don’t take my film-watching so seriously, even when it’s Godard. Also, I should add that I am completely captivated with Anna Karina’s beauty.)
Tonight my modern dance teacher is showing a piece at Dance Place as part of a choreographers’ showcase. He’s resuming his professionals’ class on Thursdays, and between now & then (which will include two other classes with him) I need to heal a severely floor-burned knee. Tomorrow I’m seeing the New Pornographers (after Sex and the City, of course, when I can’t wait for Berger’s clothing-related insult to Carrie, per the episode’s previews).
I’m back in yoga somewhat regularly, including at my old teacher’s studio. I paid off my credit card debt. I’ve also started perusing the Real Estate section of the paper (just perusing, mind you).
I hope you’re having a good weekend.
Current blog reading: perhaps my favorite DC blogger, The Agitator. Also, funny girl & journal-type blogger Sarah B. UPDATE: Go read Lane, too, because he updated and because I really dig his blog and because soon he will be moving from Alaska to within walking distance of me.

Happy 4th!
(This was the evening’s view from my apartment window. No, I didn’t even have to leave home. Need I mention it was like 100 degrees today?)

No wonder I seem to be getting more hits from the DC blog map.
And with that, I’m gone. No updates for awhile, folks. Nothing to say and no time to say it anyway.
