Leaving for Columbus in the morning and totally not sleepy. That’s okay, because I’m watching Ryan Adams in a program called “Music in High Places” on–believe it or not–MTV. Who would’ve thought: quality programming on MTV. Check mtv.com & your local listings because it’ll be re-airing over the next week. He’s in Jamaica (I think; I missed the intro), and the program features little interviews but mostly accoustic music, sometimes with the locals. It is classy, and funny, and beautiful.

Watch the trailer for the film adaptation of Michael Cunningham’s The Hours. (It requires QuickTime, which means I have to wait until I get home.) Yes, that’s Nicole Kidman. (Link via The Plastic Cat.)

So did you watch the VMAs? Because I had about 70 loads of laundry to do last night and I’m going away this weekend, I stayed in and watched most of it. I surprise myself in saying that I enjoyed both Pink’s and Shakira’s performances. The former I tend to view as an obnoxious little no-talent, and the latter–while having mesmerizing hips–has a voice that makes me want to peel off my skin. Avril Levinge’s child-like presentation and vocabulary make me glad I’m a grown-up. Jimmy Fallon? Still cute. Biker Slut Britney was no match for whatever scaps of material the always tragically dressed Christina Aguilera was calling an outfit. These two really don’t bother me, as much anguish as they seem to inflict on the rest of the world. I actually fell asleep before it was over, so I missed The Hives v. The Vines, but I’m sure I’ll be able to catch it another time.
UPDATE: A snippet from–who else?–Treacher:
Speaking of former rock gods from Indiana, it was also nice to see Axl Rose is still alive, even if he’s turned into a croaking, dreadlocked fatty. For the first 10 seconds or so it was like, “Oh my God, it’s GNR! Holy shit!” And then he tried to run across the stage and sing at the same time, had what appeared to be a mild heart attack, and then lost all control over what’s left of his vocal cords. It made me feel bad for enjoying his humiliation so much. And the band. It’s cool that he’s got Buckethead and the bass player from the Replacements onstage together, and they played all the notes, but it’s not Guns N’ Roses, now, is it? It’s Axl fronting his own cover band.
UPDATE #2: Did you happen to catch Moby taking pictures during the pre-show? You can see them and others here. He’s a bit of a weblogger himself, you know.

I haven’t done this in awhile–The Friday Five:
1. What’s your favorite piece of clothing that you currently own? Either my puma sneakers or a black vintage-looking corduroy jacket that I spent way too much money on last year but I wear all the time, weather permitting.
2. What piece of clothing do you most want to acquire? A red leather handbag. Not too unlike this one, but hopefully for a fraction of the price. I’m becoming increasingly obsessed with handbags.
3. What piece of clothing can you not bring yourself to get rid of? Why? My oxblood Doc Marten boots from eons ago. There’s a crack across one of the soles, so wearing them outside if it’s rained recently is impossible. I love them. They feel like slippers, I’ve worn them so much. But I can’t remember the last time I wore them, actually. I also have a pair of beat-up, slightly too-big, second-hand, brown corduroys that I will probably never throw away.
4. What piece of clothing do you look your best in? Last year I bought a black dress for the holidays, and I have to admit, I look fabulous in it. Too bad I never have the occasion to wear it.
5. What has been your biggest fashion accident? When I was in high school, I used to go out of my way to wear strange clothing. I don’t know if we’re talking Carrie Bradshaw at her worst, but there were some interesting volcanic ensembles.

Strangest thing: my yoga teacher (of all people) mentioned that today is Michael Jackson’s 44th birthday. This announcement triggered a memory from last night’s dream, in which Michael appeared. He was looking more Thriller/Bad era Michael rather than present day freakazoid Michael. The poor dude was feeling unloved, unappreciated, and down on his luck, and I assured him that I am a big fan, even though I am not (anymore). But the truth is (and this truth-truth, not just dream-truth), “Thriller” is among my all-time favorite albums. I still have the original cassette from 6th grade, and I still listen to it. So here’s to you, Michael. Happy birthday ya big freak.

I’m not one to frequent Aint It Cool News, but there’re some reactions to a test screening of Soderbergh’s remake of Solaris.

It’s in the 60’s this morning, and in celebration I’m wearing my favorite black turtleneck. It didn’t occur to me, however, that the office temperature might not be adjusted accordingly. So far, so good.
When I walked into my office this morning, I almost cried at what I left behind from last night. I hurried out at 6 to have a drink across the street with coworkers, and in doing so I literally dropped what I was working on, which amounted to little more than fighting with myself over minutiae. Scraps of yellow legal pad paper everywhere, math & stats books scattered crazily. Incomprehensible scribbles on “my” white board. (My lack of a white board has been a source of contention practically since I started here, though I was informed by my boss yesterday that an order has been put into the budget request. In grad school, most people had them not only in their offices, but in their apartments as well. I think I willed my old one to my former housemates.) I’m putting it all aside today, and returning to boredom, save for yoga class at lunchtime.
Speaking of government budgets…..I don’t ask for much. I don’t have one of those fancy expensive ergonomic chairs (especially since I sit with my feet up half the time; I don’t think the chair would be much help). I just want a white board (and I’ll quit whining about that, I promise). In the past few weeks, however, I’ve seen people in other parts of our office getting flat-screen monitors. Apparently we’re all getting them. Is it just me, or does that seem wasteful? I don’t know how much those things go for, but I know my regular old 19 inch monitor suits me just fine. I also know we have to fight for budgets if we want to do this or that project, even though I see people sitting around with little to do. Granted, we lack resources among the computer programmers, but part of that is because we don’t let our economists, some of whom know what they’re doing when it comes to programming, be active in that aspect of development, because it’s outside their job descriptions.
Okay, that’s it for now.

Oh, THERE’s my Pi! (plus three others; and that’s as low as I’m going, kids.)

Oh, and just so you know, the joke about that tattoo being more appropriate if it were on my front rather than my back has already been made.

Some thoughts on why DC lost the U.S. Olympic bid. Frankly, I’m glad (assuming I’m still living here in 2012).

Scroll down for the picture of the day, as promised.
It’s one of those mornings: raining so hard that an umbrella is rendered nearly useless (and might I mention that I can hardly remember a lifestyle where I didn’t have to walk where I need to go; not that I mind–helps me keep my girlish figure), and I’m cranking through some matrix algebra basically to prove to myself something that I already know is true. I haven’t done matrix algebra by hand in several years (who really needs to, unless you’re some kind of theoretician), so it’s slow-going.
I was going to post another picture of the day, an extra-special one that I think will be a hit, but I forgot to upload it to my server late last night when I got home, and I don’t have it here at work. Tomorrow, maybe.

Woohoo! I was listening to WOXY, the medium-market-but-leagues-above-all-others-of-its-kind alternative radio station located in the town of my alma mater. Anyway, I was perusing the playlists, and I saw a Jurassic 5 single listed. What?! Why didn’t anybody tell me they’ve something new out? Then I went to their site, and I see that the new full-length is set for release Oct. 8.
