Cinema Paradiso has been rereleased with nearly an hour of added material. Can you believe I’ve never seen it? I know it’s the favorite film of one of my best friends, and still I’ve never seen it.

While we’re seeing numerous online tributes to The Who bassist John Entwistle, nobody infuses poignancy and humor quite like Tony Pierce.

Yeah, the silly quizzes bother me too, Ratbastard. But the Kevin Smith character quiz is amusing, and I came out as God. Yes, God. Of course the #2 in my ranking was Trish the Dish, so I’m not sure how that all works out.
(Can you tell someone is avoiding work today?)

No Lileks. Bummer. He’s on my short list of Cool People I’d Really Like to Meet.
UPDATE: What the hell: First Kaus drops out, then Lileks has travel problems, and now Glenn too.

The Friday Five:
When was the last time you…
1. …sent a handwritten letter? My dear friend and old college housemate Matt (who lives in Chicago) and I communicate exclusively through handwritten letters. That reminds me, it’s my turn to write….
2. …baked something from scratch or made something by hand? I generally don’t make anything totally from scratch. The answer would probably be bread.
3. …camped in a tent? I’m no camper. Probably 1997.
4. …volunteered your time to church, school, or community? All of my community theatre work is volunteered.
5. …helped a stranger? I give directions all the time.

Looks like the Bush twins were a mere couple of doors down from our Wednesday Chi Cha gathering.

One of the women in my cast of Into the Woods has a teenage daughter, an actress at Duke Ellington School for the Arts, and she (the daughter) is in the latest Cherry Red Production, Schoolgirl Figure. I’ve never seen a Cherry Red production, but I understand they rely on sick humor. This particular play, about eating disorders, was written by Wendy MacLeod, who is best known for her play-turned-movie The House of Yes.
Meanwhile, Kenneth Lonergan’s plays are still running at the Studio, but not for long. I know JenRaj caught The Little Foxes at Shakespeare, and G.J. has been making some noise about seeing it. I still haven’t made it up to New York to see some of the plays I was looking forward to up there.

There’s some outstanding Buffy commentary prompted by Jessica by way of Asparagirl (read the Comments section, in particular).

From Fresh Hell: an interview with Anthony Stewert Head. An excerpt with which I wholeheartedly agree:
As a whole, the season was more introspective, with the characters wondering, ”What do we do now that suddenly we’re responsible for ourselves?” I know some people complained about the three human bad guys, but if it had just been another evil demon, it wouldn’t have had the same effect. It was much more subversive this way, and made so much sense for the story arc. So yes, I’ve read some of the reviews, but it’s crap, to be honest.

If you can get past the fact that Dolly Parton is appearing at the 9:30 Club (the 9:30 Club!) in a few weeks, try imagining that it’s already sold out.
Last night I hung out with G.J. (Gay Jeff, of course) on his balcony, drinking wine, talking, sweating (it’s freaking oppressively hot here). That’s the way I like to spend my summers: sitting outside, drinking, talking. [And by the way, he's all set to get pin-up girl #2 on his other forearm.]
UPDATE: It has come to my attention that the way in which I refer to G.J., the way I talk about him, might lead some to believe there is something funny going on between the two of us. Please let me emphasize that is not the case. He’s gay, people!
