I’m in a world of hurt this morning. I opted out of dance class last night (withthe excuse that I’d abused my body enough this week) to go out for drinks, and in turn, really abuse my body. I’m not sure I’ll be making it to Atomic tonight. I’m at work only because I have a mountain of work to do. I’m going to prioritize, get what I need to have done, done, and skip on out of here. Actually, no skipping. Trudging.

I’ve been hearing some version of this story for like a decade now.

Guess who watched the Miss Universe pageant last night? I knew the second Miss Russia walked on stage in her nontraditional flowy gown (looked like Chanel to me) that she would win. And if you’ve been looking for a reason to stop reading this page, I suppose you’ve just found it.

More Tom Waits than you can shake a stick at. I was beginning to wonder when the guy was going to get some press.

Hey New Yorkers. See who is blogging where you live. Nifty. (Thanks to Jason and Thomas, who has suggested that DC bloggers do something similar.)

Last night I took class with Gus Giordano, and it was the best class I’ve had in a long time. He is so nice, with a very dry sense of humor. When I got there, my friend Michelle was up towards the front so I went & sat by her, and when class started, I found myself front & center. I never stand front & center during master classes, (a) because of the intimidation factor of the teacher, (b) because there’s always people more advanced than me in the class who rightfully should be up front (as demonstrators), and (c) because not being used to a teacher’s style lends itself to lots of fuck-ups. But this was not the case! His combinations, while challenging, were not long or difficult to remember. And, standing front & center means you get good corrections as well as compliments. For example, he told me I had a nice line but I look unsure of myself, that I have good arms, and nice feet. Gus Giordano! Said I have good arms & feet! Of course, this is jazz class; when I think of “good feet”, I think of exquisitely curved ballet feet, with which I am not blessed. Anyway, the old philosophy of sitting in the front in college classes is true for dance classes as well.

The New York City Ballet’s Diamond Project is airing on PBS this Thursday. This is basically a showcase for new choreography.

What a long, crazy weekend. I saw my friend Jeff in a local production of The Scarlet Pimpernel on Saturday. He was great, but the production was just shy of terrible. It lacked focus, direction, and character study. Afterwards I crashed his cast party, and we drank & stayed out too late, but we hadn’t seen each other in so long so it didn’t matter. He didn’t have a matinee on Sunday, so we drank mimosas all day, then went out to dinner, then napped, then went out again until 3 am. And I have a putrid looking hickey on my back that he gave me. It was more or less based on a dare.

The Friday Five:
1. What’s the last vivid dream that you remember having? A couple of nights ago I dreamt that I bore twins. Pregnancy is not an uncommon theme in my dreams. I’ve read it symbolizes new beginnings or personal gain. There has never been, to my recollection, a father present in these dreams.
2. Do you have any recurring dreams? The usual naked dreams, and I’m not talking about the sexy kind. I’ve also had recurring dreams of having to go on stage, usually to dance, having never seen the choreography before. I’d say both of these symbolize my general state of anxiety.
3. What’s the scariest nightmare you’ve ever had? I don’t have nightmares. I’m serious. I’ve witnessed shootings & whatnot in my dreams, but always as a casual observer. And I have never been the target of a violent act in my dreams. When I’m really sick & have a fever, I have visions of the walls expanding and closing in on me, but that’s usually during that in-between state of wake and sleep. When I was in college & graduate school, particularly when I was stressed out about an impending econ test or if I was troubled by a homework problem, I dreamt in math. In most cases it was complete nonsense, and I usually woke up with a headache. Once I solved a homework problem in my dream, though.
4. Have you ever written your dreams down or considered it? Why or why not? I used to in college, but that’s when I kept a journal and wrote in it religiously.
5. Have you ever had a lucid dream? What did you do in it? Again in college. My roommate at the time told me about this, so we would make conscious efforts to think about trying to realize we’re dreaming before we’d fall alseep. I don’t recall the details, but I also once (and only once) had a dream within a dream within a dream.

Before I forget (because I might, given my memory lapses) here is an announcement for a DC Blogger Bash. I think if I post it here then at least I will use it like a post-it note, and then I won’t be kicking myself for missing the party.
Gene Healy, Brink Lindsey and I got together and decided to throw a D.C.-area bloggers bash. Bloggers, blog fans, blog readers, anti-bloggers, and people who have a vague idea of what blogging is are all invited.
THURSDAY, JUNE 6 AT THE RENDEZVOUS LOUNGE — 18th and Kalorama.
