Nothing lifts a girl’s spirits like a little shopping. My latest “project” was intended to be sewing some dresses for summer (after all, all those years in 4-H plus the sewing machine gathering dust in my closet should be put to good use) but as the second-hand clothing shop is much closer than the fabric store (and I don’t believe in driving), I ended up with 4 kick-ass one-of-a-kind dresses that will require only a little fixing up with the sewing machine.

When I haven’t been sleeping, I’ve spent today nursing last night’s Blogger outing-induced hangover. The combination having some effect includes sitting on my roof with Dubus (”Killings”, the basis for the movie, In the Bedroom) and a little hair of the dog, soaking up a little sun & warmth. After-the-fact apologies to poor Lex, whose ear I most certainly must’ve talked off most of last night. What the hell was I saying, anyway?

Check it out. Ken from Heisenberg’s Fun House drew this sketch of me based on the few photos of me made available through this site over time. It doesn’t look exactly like me, but I had to post it anyway:

Ratbastard has a lovely reaction to Washingtonian Magazine. Read it and laugh.

Hey, I know it’s a holiday weekend and all, but is anyone doing Atomic tonight?

Yesterday I received the May issue of Discover magazine, and it’s full of interesting science-y goodness. I was going to bring it along today to post some stuff, but I forgot it. Maybe this weekend. The only thing I can recall right now was a story on aging laboratory chimps. One of the blurbs mentions a chimp’s preference for television, notably the Playboy Channel.

The Friday Five (my first in awhile):
1. If you could eat dinner with and “get to know” one famous person (living or dead), who would you choose? Just one person? I think of all my interests: dance, music, economics, math, film, etc….how do you choose among those fields? Oh all right. Steven Soderbergh.
2. Has the death of a famous person ever had an effect on you? Who was it and how did you feel? Not really. The only two famous-person-deaths that come to mind that had some effect on me were Kurt Cobain and Princess Diana. My reaction to Cobain was one of anger, if I recall correctly. Princess Diana’s death was more of a shock, only because I looked up to her as a little girl, so she was always sort of an icon to me. I suppose those two are pretty typical answers. I was too young when John Lennon died, so that had no effect on me.
3. If you could BE a famous person for 24 hours, who would you choose? I’d be a famous dancer. It doesn’t really matter which one, but definitely a ballerina. I’m also curious to know what it’s like being the President of the United States for a day.
4. Do people ever tell you that you look like someone famous? Who? Yes. In high school I was likened to Debbie Gibson. I’ve also been told I resemble Molly Ringwald.
5. Have you ever met anyone famous? I met Adam West in an airport.

Via InstaPundit: Lee Brockhorn at The Daily Standard writes on the Condoleeza Rice wave of popularity in the blogosphere.
From yesterday’s Post: Robert Samuelson on free speech, I mean, campaign finance.
Here’s the first review I’ve seen for Panic Room, courtesy of Mike D’Angelo. Here’s more, from Salon. You know, I like Jodie Foster a lot, but I don’t love her. Her acting isn’t brilliant, in that you can often pinpoint the struggle to create a character, but at times (as in Taxi Driver,The Accused, and Silence of the Lambs) it is exceptionally strong, and even riveting. And I love David Fincher, a visual master.

Via The Plastic Cat: trailer for The Rules of Attraction. Requires Quicktime, which I don’t have since I’m not allowed to install things on my work computer. This is my favorite among Ellis’ books, so this better not be a botched horror of a movie.

The show 24: what the hell. I’m irritated at how they just keep introducing more and more characters. For the first 5 or 6 hours, the show was kick-ass. Then it turned into a big rambling mess. The Osbournes: man, the show just gets funnier every week. The whole “vagina doctor” business with his daughter almost makes me wish I grew up in their family instead of my own.

I downloaded the True West clip off of Salon (as part of their premium service campaign, to which I’m not giving in). Dare I say it, judging solely by the sound of the actors’ voices, I think the version I saw at Arena was far better. (And by the way, sometimes I can download mp3s at work, sometimes I cannot. What gives?) I watched The Right Stuff over the weekend as part of my fascination with Sam Shepard. What a sexy, enigmatic man he is. If you’ve got Quicktime, here’s a PBS site which accompanied a program from a few years ago, with clips from it.

Because I took down (for now) the photo at the left, and because Glenn remarked how much he liked that photo, I’ll compensate with an amusing photo I found amongst my files:

It’s a coupla years old, back when I was wearing my hair blonde. I was taking pictures around town to send to my mom. A tourist passerby offered to take this for me. Note that I’m blocking much of the already partially hidden White House, but you’ve got a nice view of a trash can and a park bench upon which lays my backpack that’s anyone’s for the taking, as I’m standing there not watching it. This pic makes me look a little thick in the middle, too.

If you missed the hubris of Halle Berry and her acceptance speech (Slotman calls it a grand mal) here’s a transcript, courtesy of Ken Goldstein. Read down further–he had some funny ongoing commentary from that night.
So April 10th is what would be my two-year anniversary of quitting smoking. That is, it would be the anniversary had I not started up again this past December. Last year on that date I ran a 10 mile race! I think it fitting that I quit on April 10th this year. I’m already disgusted with myself, and I’m finding cigarettes less and less enjoyable in the short time I’ve been smoking again. It’d be nice if I had some running goal in mind, but the truth is, I really don’t like running. It’s nice, occasionally, to go running on the Mall when the weather’s right, for maybe 3 miles, but that’s it. Running isn’t fun. Running is boring. Instead I’m shooting for the more costly option of dance & yoga classes 5 days a week.
